Van Gogh’s newly discovered drawing shows an exhausted man, which is such a mood
People have heard of the well-known paintings of Vincent Van Gogh like The Starry Night, Almond Blossoms, Starry Night Over the Rhône, and many more. The artist was said to have produced over 900 paintings, and reports stated that there’s a newly discovered artwork that was recently displayed at The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
Created back in November 1882, the sketch is described to be an earlier take on the same subject of the Van Gogh museum’s collection titled Worn Out. The drawing shows a man sitting down and hunched over, seemingly exhausted. The artist had a penchant for working-class figures, and this sketch was created at a time when several of his studies were people mostly from Dutch Reformed Old Men’s and Women’s House.
The pencil drawing has been stored away in a private collection for more than a century, and was displayed for the first time on Thursday. A Dutch family bought the drawing in 1910 and went to the Van Gogh museum to have it authenticated. Experts later verified that was a “new work” of the post-impressionist painter.
Verifying the sketch has been made easier since it was believed to be purchased from Henk Bremmer, a well-known Van Gogh collector. Experts also examined that the materials used are similar to what the artist used such as carpenter’s pencil, watercolor paper with a specific watermark, and trails of damage on the back because of the way he pins his paper to his drawing board.
‘It’s quite rare for a new work to be attributed to Van Gogh,’ said Van Gogh Museum director Emilie Gordenker. ‘We’re proud to be able to share this early drawing and its story with our visitors.’
If you happen to be in Amsterdam, you can stop by the Van Gogh Museum to take a look at the sketch since it will only be on display until January 2, 2022. The newly verified piece will be returned to the owners.
