Janice de Belen won Best Actress at a Manhattan film fest

While many local films have received international awards, there are also a couple of artists who received recognition abroad such as Janine Guttierez for her Rising Star award at the New York Asian Film Fest, and John Arcilla bagged the Volpi Cup for Best Actor. Meanwhile, Janice de Belen recently won Best Actress at the 2021 International Film Festival Manhattan (IFFM Autumn).

The 52-year-old posted the news on her win for a role in the short film Sugat Sa Dugo (Wounded Blood) on Instagram. She acknowledged the New York-based festival and showed appreciation to the film’s director Danni Ugali. She also gave thanks to screenwriter and executive producer Bambbi Fuentes.

‘It is any actors dream to be garnered such an honor that goes beyond our borders,’ her caption read. ‘May the intention of this film be successful in reminding people that apart from the coronavirus, A.I.D.S. is still a very serious concern around the world.’

Sugat Sa Dugo was an official selection at the Manhattan film fest under the short film category. It also received the Independent Achievement Award for Producing. The heavy drama follows the story of an absentee mother (de Belen) whose son (Khai Flores) is about to die due to HIV/AIDS.

In an interview with the Inquirer, de Belen shared that she agreed to be part of the project because she wanted to support Fuentes’ advocacy on AIDS and it’s “still something to be concerned about.”
