National Planetarium temporarily closes after over four decades

Throughout the pandemic, many local fave spots closed their doors like Cinema Centenario and UP Diliman’s ChoKiss, among others. Earlier in July, the National Planetarium reopened after over a year. But the museum suddenly announced its temporary closing on Monday, October 11.

In a Facebook post, the National Museum said that the 46-year-old building is set to be decommissioned to give way to the development plans of the National Parks Development Committee (NPDC). It stated that this announcement came with “a measure of sadness, fondness and nostalgia”, but also with excitement for its future.

‘There are times in the life of a beloved institution where a long chapter has to be brought to a close in order to start a new one, for a new contemporary world and a new set of generations of Filipinos,’ it added.

The post explained that the NPDC has plans in the central and western areas of Rizal Park, while the National Museum of the Philippines has taken over the eastern section and has developed projects of their own in the National Museum Complex. The eastern part includes the National Museum of Anthropology and the National Museum of Natural History around Agrifina Circle.

‘We are sad to retire the old building, which has in its own way been a landmark in Manila and a pillar of the National Museum of the Philippines as a whole, but we are excited and motivated to work to deliver a new facility that will breathe new life into the National Planetarium as a beloved institution,’ the post read.

The National Museum has yet to elaborate its plans since it’s still in the development stage. But it mentioned that the new National Planetarium will be “truly worthy of the name in our present time.” The announcement said, ‘[It] will be designed to serve the public well for many more decades to come with the unique experience that only a world-class planetarium can provide.’
