Noli de Castro suddenly withdraws his 2022 senatorial bid

Former Vice President of the Philippines Noli de Castro announced his senatorial bid for the upcoming elections on October 7. But he suddenly withdrew his candicacy today, October 13. The veteran news anchor said that he can better serve the people through the media.

Within less than a week after De Castro filed his certificate of candidacy, he said in a statement posted on his daughter Kat de Castro’s Facebook page, ‘Nais kong iparating sa lahat ng aking mga kaibigan at supporters na naghahanda na sanang tumulong sa akin, na nagpasiya akong hindi na ituloy ang aking kandidatura.’

De Castro further explained that his withdrawal to clinch a seat in the Senate didn’t change his plans to help the country. He said, ‘Napag-isip-isip kong mas makatutulong ako sa pagbibigay ng boses sa ating mga kababayan sa pamamagitan ng pamamahayag.’

De Castro also expressed his appreciation to Aksyon Demokratiko, a political group he aligned himself with during the announcement of his senatorial bid. The party’s president, Isko Moreno, said in a separate statement that they respect his decision.

With De Castro out of the race, Moreno is left with two candidates for the senatorial slate, namely Mindanao civic leader Samira Gutoc and education entrepreneur Carl Balita.

‘At sa lahat ng nagtitiwala sa aking mga kabayan, maraming maraming salamat! Hawak ko sa aking puso ang ipinapakita ninyong pagmamahal, suporta, at tiwala,’ De Castro added. ‘Ituloy po natin ang pagtutulungan para sa mas malakas na boses ng bayan. Salamat po mga kabayan!’

De Castro announced his departure from ABS-CBN, his home for several decades, on the same day he declared his senatorial candidacy. According to another post by his daughter Kat, the 72-year-old is currently spending time with his family. She said, ‘What’s his next move? Wala pa. Pahinga muna siya. Have a nice day everyone!’
