This documentary on an enslaved Filipina domestic helper won a New York Fest award

Philippine cinema’s list of movies that have made their mark in international film fests. Following two local entries to compete at the Tokyo Film Fest and Janine Gutierrez’s win at the New York Asian Film Fest, ABS-CBN’s documentary Fedelina: A Stolen Life won silver for the World’s Best TV and Film Awards at the 2021 New York Festivals.

The documentary directed by Jet Leyco follows a Filipina domestic helper named Fedelina Lugasan, who was enslaved in the United States for over six decades. The film competed under the Biography and Profiles category and is also one of the six entries from the country that made it to the finals.

The film presents Felinda’s grief and fear at the time she was enduring the harshness of her employers abroad and how she was rescued through the efforts of fellow Filipinos and US Authorities. It also showed how she was reunited with her family, whom she had lost contact with for many years.

Fedelina: A Stolen Life previously aired on ABS-CBN’s platforms such as Kapamilya Online Live, Kapamilya Channel, and iWantTFC. The documentary aims to “enlighten Filipinos about the reality of human trafficking and hopes to inspire other victims and survivors that there is life after their suffering.”

An entry from GMA-7 also won bronze at the NY film fest for Reporter’s Notebook‘s episode titled ‘Miguel’s Wounds’. Apart from that, the network’s other programs made it as finalists such as Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho’s story titled ‘The Woman Slashed On Her Face’, an episode from Reel Time titled ‘This Abled’, The Atom Araullo Specials’ episode titled ‘Dreams of Gold’, Alden’s Reality: The Virtual Reality Concert, and The Clash.
