This Filipino para dance sports team had a 19-medal finish
Bringing home just one medal could be enough to make an athlete’s day. However, the Philippine Para Dancesport Team scored a total of nineteen medals during the Polish Para Dance Sport Open 2021, a world qualifying competition held in Poland from October 9 to 10.
PH Ambassador to Poland Leah M. Basinang-Ruiz congratulated the team in person and released a statement that read, ‘The Philippine Embassy in Warsaw proudly joins the Filipino nation in lauding the outstanding and historic achievement of the 17-member Philippine Team consisting of seven gold, four silver, and eight bronze medals.’
One of the members, Edelyn de Asis scored gold in three single: the Junior Competition, Women’s Single freestyle 2, and Single Conventional 2 tilt. She also dominated the Duo Freestyle Class 2 with her dance partner Julius Jun Obero. Two of their teammates, Anne Charlaine Santos and Christian Apolinario, also landed bronze in the same class.
Rhea Marquez and Obero scored another back-to-back gold in the Combi Latin Class 2 and Freestyle Combi Class 2. When it came to the Combi Latin Class 2, De Asis and Shaquille Hanz Basan got silver, and Anne Charlaine Santos and Jed Villaruel bagged the bronze.
On the other hand, Jhona Peña and Felimon Baguio II won silver, while the Santos and Villaruel duo settled for bronze in Freestyle Combi Class 2. The tandem that landed the seventh gold was Peña and Joey Maglasangi n the Doubles Standard Class 2. They also took home bronze in the Solo Men’s Class 2 Freestyle.
The team is coached by Genice Bong Marquez along with assistant coaches Tristan Ducay and Roque Marquez. Para dance sport is an extremely elegant, graceful and stylish sport that involves athletes with a physical impairment that affects the lower limbs.
