This Filipino ‘Skipman’ broke the world record for the most double under skips

Is 2022 one of the best years for Filipinos in the sports realm? Many athletes won big during the Tokyo Games, while pole vaulter EJ Obiena also set a new record. Recently, Ryan Alonzo a.k.a. “Skipman” broke the world record for having the most number of double under skips at the Jump To Greater Heights event in Ayala Malls Circuit Makati.

During the 12-hour long event last Saturday, Skipman officially beat the 20,000 mark of under skips by doubling it to a total of 40, 980. When it comes to jump rope, double under is when participants need to jump up higher than usual while swinging the rope twice under their feet. He completed it within six hours.

While it takes hard work and endurance, Alonzo had seven-minute breaks before the end of every hour to rest and perform breathing exercises. He also made sure to stretch between each session to guarantee his legs can withstand the demanding feat.

After achieving the record-breaking achievement, Alonzo thanked everyone who supported him and shared that it was very overwhelming. He said, ‘I didn’t expect talaga na maaabot ko pa and when you guys started cheering parang becoming happy lang, suddenly mataas na pala number ko in that hour.’

Coach Gadric Chusenfu explained that Alonzo’s training was similar to those who prepare for a marathon, which includes a variation on speed, strength, and endurance workouts to ensure that he is physically set for the challenge. He added, ‘He did a fair amount of running but most importantly is nutrition and recovery and also the pacing and the strategy.’

The 34-year old has pending recognition from the Guinness World Records, as of writing.
