This gynecologist claims to have invented the world’s first unisex condom
Among all the taboo topics, sex is most likely one of the subjects that society remains to avoid. In light of empowering people regarding reproductive health, regardless of their sex and sexual orientation, a Malaysian gynecologist claims to have created the world’s first unisex condom.
The condom in question can be used by females or males, according to John Tang Ing Chinh, a gynecologist at medical supplies firm Twin Catalyst. He explained that it was made from a medical-grade material called polyurethane. It’s flexible yet durable and waterproof, which is also commonly applied as a dressing for injuries or wounds.
‘It’s basically a regular condom with an adhesive covering… It’s a condom with an adhesive covering that attaches to the vagina or penis, as well as covering the adjacent area for extra protection,’ added Tang. The adhesive can be seen on one side of the condom, which indicates that it’s reversible and either sex can use it.
‘Once you put it on, you often don’t realize that it’s there,’ the gynecologist said as he talks about the dressing made from the said material. He also explained that his invention has gone through many stages of clinical research and testing.
‘Based on the number of clinical trials we have conducted, I am quite optimistic that given time it will be a meaningful addition to the many contraceptive methods used in the prevention of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases,’ Tang added.
Tang named his contraceptive the Wondaleaf Unisex Condom, with each box containing two pieces of condoms. It will be priced at 14.99 ringgit (approximately P180), which will be available for the public on the firm’s website in December. In the Philippines, the average price of condoms ranges from P80 to P120 for a box of three.
