A newly discovered beetle was named after ADMU’s former president
After almost three decades, researchers in the country discovered two new types of beetles under the Byrrhinus species. One of which was named after former Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) President Fr. Jett Villarin. One of the small, dark, and hairy insects will be known as the “Fr. Jett beetle“.
Emmanuel D. Delocado and Hendrik Freitag from the Ateneo Biodiversity Research Laboratory of the Department of Biology uncovered the two new species on the island of Negros in Western Visayas. They uploaded the study relating to this discovery through the international scientific journal ZooKeys.
The two new beetles were called Byrrhinus villarini, after Fr. Villarin, and Byrrhinus negrosensis, which was named after the island of Negros since both species were collected in that area.
According to ADMU’s announcement, Delocado and Freitag named the new species after Fr. Villarin “in recognition of his strong push for the environmental research agenda in the University during his nine-year tenure.”
Fr. Jett happens to be the current Executive Director of the Manila Observatory, a Jesuit scientific research institution with research work in the fields of atmospheric and earth science in the Philippines and the Southeast Asian region.
Fr. Jett was also part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that won a Nobel Peace Prize for its “evaluation of the status and recommendations on circumventing the global climate crisis” in 2007.
