A vintage Apple computer was sold at around P20 million
Apple’s devices always seem to have a way of emptying people’s bank accounts – from its desktops to iPhones, and many more. It also recently released a pricey polishing cloth. But this time, the tech giant’s first computer a.k.a. “Chaffey College” Apple-1 was sold for $400,000 or around P20,000,000.
This OG Apple desktop was one out of 200 hand-built computers by company founders Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and a skeleton crew in the garage of Jobs’ parents. Auction house John Moran Auctioneers said on its website that it has undergone an extensive evaluation to prove its authenticity. It also contains original parts and it’s still in working order.
Apart from including the motherboard, monitor, and keyboard, this particular Apple-1 computer will get tech enthusiasts excited since it also comes with 2 cassette tapes, 3 wires, and a period xerox-copy of the original owner’s manual.
The listing also highlights that the wooden case that protects the computer is made from Koa wood, which is still in good condition. The description explained that the Koa tree is considered much rarer and more expensive, ‘There are only six known examples of the Koa wooden case in existence, and this unit is one of them.’
The auction house revealed that the Apple-1 computer had two previous unnamed owners: an electronics professor at Chaffey College who sold it to his student in 1977. The student said, ‘He was excited to buy the Apple-II and sold me this for about $650.’
‘Of course, nobody knew it would become a collector’s item,’ the anonymous seller added and they were correct. After over four decades, they sold it at such a wide increase from $650 (P32,500) to $400,000 (P20,000,000). The buyer’s identity has not been revealed as well.
