‘All Too Well (Taylor’s Version)’ is a middle finger to the patriarchy

It’s been almost a decade since Taylor Swift’s album Red was released. Many things happened over the past years, but the feelings that fans get from her songs are still very much present. The singer dropped Red (Taylor’s Version) on November 12, which is proof that she’ll be able to fully own back her songs.

In case you forgot what happened, record executive Scooter Braun acquired Big Machine, the label Swift was under before. He also got hold of the masters of her six albums namely Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, and Reputation. Over a year later, he sold all of them to a private equity firm Shamrock Holdings.

After all the drama, Swift decided to re-record all of her six albums and made sure her new versions will be the ones played by fans and used in ads, movies, etc. Today, she tweeted in light of her latest release, ‘It never would have been possible to go back & remake my previous work, uncovering lost art & forgotten gems along the way if you hadn’t emboldened me.’

‘Red is about to be mine again, but it has always been ours,’ she emphasized. ‘Now we begin again. Red (my version) is out.’

TikTok famous Harvard law spouses Maclen and Ashleigh shared a more digestible explanation. In 2019, Braun also acquired Swift’s Master Recordings copyright, the perfect recordings of Swift’s discography used for commercial purposes. But Swift still owns the composition copyright, which contains sheet music, melody, and basically the overall structure of the songs. This allowed her the free reign to legally re-record her songs.

Meanwhile, Swifties worldwide couldn’t contain their excitement specifically when it comes to All Too Well (Taylor’s Version) since it’s now 10-minutes long. Swift also added a new line, ‘You were tossing me the car keys / ‘Fuck the patriarchy.’‘ While the lyrics sheet indicates she’s quoting someone else, it sounds more powerful than the 2012 version.

All Too Well (Taylor’s Version)‘s music video directed by Swift herself is set to premiere tomorrow, November 13 at 8 AM PHT.
