Be a ‘trapo’, save turtles, and more with these PH card games
If there’s one constant thing during the quarantine, it could arguably be using your phone to keep in touch with other people. While there’s no denying that many apps have been useful, you probably still miss having conversations with your friends IRL. But as you plan your next in-person hangout, maybe you could include these Filipino-made card games in the mix.
Yup, there are a handful of underrated decks that you might not have heard of but are actually very interesting. Scroll down to see which one fits the liking of your barkada so that you can pull it out if you’re running out of things of drinks or things to discuss.
Politricks
Politricks is a card game that will enable you to “unleash your inner trapo”. Entrepreneurs RB Ting and PJ Lim created 104 deck cards that are inspired by current events and personalities in Philippine politics. As you talk about the current state of the government with your friends, all of you could also pose as dirty candidates trying to win the elections no matter what.
Throughout the game, you’ll get to give bribes to get votes and sabotage other aspirants you’re up against. There’s also an option for you to buy the West Philippine Sea for a hundred million pesos.
Hugot the Card Game
Out of the many slangs that made their way to local pop culture is the word hugot or lines that express your emotions – and Hugot the Card Game allows you to play around with that narrative. The game was created by Thomas Regala after he came from a breakup in 2015. If you’re familiar with Cards Against Humanity, then playing this won’t be a struggle. There are a hundred hugot cards with scenarios that will answer the 30 question cads.
Happy Ending
When you want to spice things up a bit, Happy Ending can do just a trick. Boardgame aficionado Birdie Silva made a deck that revolves around helping a Hornygeist a.k.a. a horny ghost who has to pass on to the other world, but it has to perform certain requests.
Players need to go through three phases to win: Revelation Card (telling personal stories or answering questions), Desire Card (more sensual dares), and the Climax Card (contains the Hornygeist’s unfulfilled wishes). Since consent is important in this game, there is a NOPE Card available at all times for anyone to back out of a certain dare. However, there will be a catch – you’ll have to strip off a piece of clothing.
Lagim
Escape the modern world and enter a 17th-century baryo setting through Lagim. Fiction Minds CEO and founder Augusto Ayo’s tabletop game will capture the interests of players who are into Filipino folklore. Players are set to protect their villages while battling forest creatures with Dark Soul coins and cards involving a diwata, tikbalang, nuno sa punso, manananggal, and more.
The concept stemmed from the idea of producing something that would help bring back attention to the Philippine heritage by showcasing it on a mainstream platform like a card game. It also strives to raise awareness about Filipino culture to a larger audience, but particularly to the younger generation.
Pawikan Patrol
There are many endangered aquatic animals and one of which is a sea turtle or pawikan. Environmental advocate Mykey Cuento used to organize conservation trips for the domed shell creatures in Bataan and La Union until he ended up designing Pawikan Patrol. The card game centers on saving sea turtles wherein players may take up the role of a Biologist, Fisherfolk, Police, or Volunteer, and all of them must defeat the poacher.
