The largest PH abstract painting is part of the 2021 Visayas Art Fair
Many Filipino artists produce artworks that are playful and relatable, while others send a strong message that ends up winning a global competition. But if you’re on the lookout for something different, the largest abstract painting in the Philippines is now on display during the first-ever Visayas Art Fair.
Called Alab ng Sining, the artwork was first seen on a billboard at the corner of EDSA and Ortigas Avenue earlier in February, which was also the National Arts Month in the country. The huge abstract painting that measures 62 feet by 40 feet was created by advertising guy turned artist Lloyd Tranco. The Bacoleño will be showing his work again at the fair to represent his region.
Tranco sees his larger-than-life artwork as a statement on the “democratization of art appreciation” and how it shouldn’t be restricted within the walls of galleries, museums, or auction houses. He said, ‘The world is our gallery, a place to share our God-given talents, a place to share our craft and ideas.
‘The purpose of art is really to connect with as many people as possible,’ Tranco continued. The painting was created amid the pandemic and the artist also sees it as a statement on social distancing.
Tranco initially took up architecture at the University of the Philippines Diliman, but he had to give up on that dream after his father’s untimely passing and eventually shifted to fine arts at La Consolacion College of Bacolod.
Speaking with Manila Bulletin Lifestyle, he shared, ‘My career is really in advertising and media. Employed by McCann Erickson Philippines in 2001 to 2005, I handled the billboard requirements of the agency. Thus my familiarity with billboards.’
The 2021 Visayas Art Fair is a project by Cebu Design Week, Inc. to merge Regions 6, 7, and 8 in the Visayas. It also strives to present the identity of the Visayan arts and culture to the world. The fair will take place from November 25 to 28 at the Montebello Hotel, Cebu.
