Face shields might say hello again due to the Omicron variant
If Filipinos had a list of things that are “too good to be true”, living in a face shield-free country would be one of them. While the government finally lifted the mandatory face shield requirement a few weeks ago, the protective gear might make a comeback following the reports of the Omicron variant.
National Task Force Against COVID-19 chief implementer Carlito Galvez, Jr. said that there’s a possibility for them to require face shields again, but they still need to decide on it. He also said, ‘I would like to encourage ang ating mga kababayan, kung kaya naman po magsuot ng face shield, ay magsuot tayo ng face shield para dagdag proteksyon na lamang po.’
‘Some people from WHO (World Health Organization) also believe na kaya nagkaroon tayo ng magandang result dito sa Delta, as compared to others, is because of also the added protection of face shields’, he added during an online press briefing.
Even if nothing is final yet, Galvez shared that Health Secretary Francisco Duque III is in favor of imposing any rules that could help curb the virus. He also reiterated the recent IATF resolution, which states that utilizing face shields is now voluntary for areas in Alert Level 1, 2, and 3.
Only individuals in areas under Alert Level 5 or those under granular lockdowns must wear face shields. It also remains mandatory for workers in healthcare settings. President Rodrigo Duterte gave LGUs and private establishments in places under Alert Level 4 the option to keep or discard the rule.
Officials clarified that there are currently no cases of the new variant in the country. The government ordered a temporary suspension of inbound flights from several countries including South Africa and Botswana, to prevent the entry of the virus. The B.1.1.529, a.k.a. Omicron virus was recently discovered in South Africa.
Before thinking of disposing or recycling your face shields, you might have to think twice and keep it just in case.
