Hayao Miyazaki is back with one last film that’s ‘fantasy on a grand scale’

It’s been eight years since Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki announced his retirement, but he’s coming back one last time to give the world another film that he describes as “fantasy on a grand scale”. Reports said that the filmmaker has been working on this over the past four years.

Speaking with the New York Times, Miyazaki shared that he isn’t done helming the new film yet that’s based on Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 novel How Do You Live?, which follows a story of a 15-year-old boy living in Tokyo after his father’s recent passing. An English translation of the book by Bruno Navasky was released in October.

Miyazaki didn’t confirm if his new feature-length project would also be called How Do You Live?, but during the interview, he was asked to interpret the question posed in the title.  He responded to the publication, ‘I am making this movie because I do not have the answer.’

For the upcoming unnamed film, Miyazaki is currently working with his Studio Ghibli colleague and producer Toshio Suzuki, who said that he “recognizes himself in one of the characters, who is not human.”

Following Miyazaki’s announcement about his retirement in 2013, his grandson Goro Miyazaki followed his footsteps and also directed a couple of films for Studio Ghibli including 2020’s Earwig and the Witch, which was the Japanese studio’s first-ever 3D computer-generated animated film. It’s about a British orphan who explores a world of magic, spells, potions, and secrets in the house of her adoptive mother-turned-evil-witch.

While there are no further details about Miyakazi’s forthcoming film, it’s still exciting to anticipate to see what the OG creator has in store for long-time viewers of his work.
