M&M’s is updating its iconic mascots to promote ‘diversity’

As a part of a new campaign to become more ‘progressive’, the iconic chocolate mascots of M&M’s have been relaunched in new shapes and sizes that aim to promote diversity.

Speaking with Adweek, M&M’s Global Vice President Jane Hwang shared that the colorful characters seen in the candy packaging have evolved to be “more representative of the dynamic and progressive world we live in.”

The individual candies will still remain to have similar dimensions, but the reimagined mascots will soon be seen across all of M&M’s visuals. For instance, the usually aggressive Red will be less bossy, while his amusingly paranoid partner Orange will embrace his anxiety.

Brown went from high stilettos to lower heels and new glasses, and Green switched its knee-high boots to casual sneakers. Hwang explained that the two will up more as a “force supporting women, together throwing shine and not shade.”

The Green character gained more attention online as users had mixed reactions and pointed out how giving up the boots doesn’t equate to female empowerment.

Mars Wrigley’s Chief Growth Officer Cathryn Sleight said in a press release that the move is a more concrete way to help people feel that they belong. She added, ‘As one of the world’s most iconic candy brands, who better to commit to a world with more moments of fun by increasing a sense of belonging around the globe than M&M’S?’

The OG M&M’S characters debuted in 1954 and have gone through many iterations. There were five characters when Blue, Green, and Orange joined Red and Yellow in 1998. Brown joined the rest in 2012. The mascots then received a more realistic rendering in 2017.
