Ylona Garcia says her ‘teen love song’ days were ‘half cringe, half necessary’

Ylona Garcia is at her peak right now. The ‘Entertain Me’ singer has signed with Asian American label 88rising, released three music videos (all with a million views), and debuted at the ‘Head in the Clouds’ festival at the Rose Bowl Stadium in California in 2021.

It’s a feel-good sight for an artist labeled as ‘underrated’ by many of her fans. ‘Underrated’ might seem like a misnomer of someone who’s 19-years-old – hardly a veteran by industry standards – but Ylo has appeared on our screens since 2014. Her fans are hungry and excited for more, and it’s something she appreciates.

‘Honestly, they make my heart melt,’ said Ylo in our interview. ‘That’s very nice of them to say, to take the time to say that. ‘I’m grateful, but I’ve quite enjoyed how my career has been going.’

‘From the start to here in LA [Los Angeles], I believe everything happens for a reason. It’s meant for you to grow to become who you are meant to be.’

‘I’m grateful for everything, good and bad; you gotta take them all in.’

Ylo has done a ton in her young career. She made her start in a popular reality show, dropped an album in 2016, and recorded OSTs for TV shows before leaving for the US. Her fans were ecstatic for the move, praising her shift from so-called ‘teeny bopper love songs’ to a more ‘serious’ form of music.

And while some artists choose to distance themselves from their past works completely, Ylo learned to embrace them, admitting they were an essential part of her career.

‘I’m half and half. Part of me feels cringe when I listen to the songs I made when I was 13. But then part of me is saying it was necessary. Not everyone is blessed with the chance to create music and have a platform where a lot of people listen to their stuff.’

‘At the end of the day, I’m grateful.’

As for the future? If ‘Entertain Me,’ a collab track with online game Valorant that has racked 5 million Spotify streams as of writing, is any indication, it seems there is nowhere to go but up for Ylona Garcia. She certainly has the talent, charisma, and a loyal fanbase to make it big. But whatever tomorrow holds, Ylo is already deadset on a list of goals.

‘I want to get into acting. I want to put an album out. I want to gift my family the house I promised them ever since I started my career. I’m gonna have pizza later. Not a very proud moment for me, but since you asked, yeah, pizza.’
