Support your children’s sexual orientation, says the pope

Parents have different ways of raising their children. Some don’t want their kids to talk back, others are cool with it. Another arguably difficult topic that many parents are conflicted about is their child’s sexual orientation. But in his weekly audience, Pope Francis offered his two cents, saying parents of gay children shouldn’t condemn them.

The 85-year-old pontiff mentioned other struggles that parents face in raising their offspring – including kids who are sick, imprisoned, or suffered untimely deaths. He said, ‘Never condemn a child.’

Pope Francis noted that parents should stand by their children and support them regardless of how they identify themselves. He adds that praying will bring light and peace to the lives of the parents as well.

Pope Francis’ view towards the LGBTQ+ community has always been on the progressive side. He endorsed same-sex civil union for the first time as a pontiff in 2020 during an interview for a documentary titled Francesco.

In the film, he explained that civil union law legally covers same-sex couples, ‘Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God. You can’t kick someone out of a family, nor make their life miserable for this.’

Another instance of the pope showing a welcoming attitude towards gay members of the church was back in 2013 when he told reporters: ‘If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?’
