Taylor Swift says it’s ‘f*cked up’ to think she isn’t a songwriter
There are many things tied to Taylor Swift’s name, but being an award-winning singer and songwriter is definitely the first thing that comes to mind. However, English musician Damon Albarn thinks otherwise and said in a Los Angeles Times interview that she doesn’t write her own music.
Taylor Swift then called out Albarn and admitted that she was “such a big fan” of him until she read the article. She clarified that she writes all of her songs and expressed, ‘Your hot take is completely false and so damaging.’
‘You don’t have to like my songs but it’s really f*cked up to try and discredit my writing. WOW,’ Swift continued. In a follow-up tweet, she savagely said, ‘PS. I wrote this tweet all by myself, in case you were wondering.’
In the LA Times interview, writer Mikael Wood spoke to Albarn, frontman of rock band Blur and electronic group Gorillaz. Wood asked his thoughts on modern musicians and described Swift as an “excellent songwriter.” Albarn replied, ‘She doesn’t write her own songs.’
@DamonAlbarn I was such a big fan of yours until I saw this. I write ALL of my own songs. Your hot take is completely false and SO damaging. You don’t have to like my songs but it’s really fucked up to try and discredit my writing. WOW. https://t.co/t6GyXBU2Jd

Wood then insisted that Swift also co-wrote some of her songs. Albarn said that co-writing doesn’t count, ‘Co-writing is very different to writing. I’m not hating on anybody, I’m just saying there’s a big difference between a songwriter and a songwriter who co-writes.’
Albarn also added that he finds Billie Eilish and her brother as “interesting” songwriters compared to Swift. He added, ‘It’s just darker – less endlessly upbeat. Way more minor and odd. I think she’s exceptional.’
About an hour after Swift tweeted about the article, Albarn replied to her tweet and apologized. He said that the interview was “reduced to clickbait”. He said, ‘The last thing I would want to do is discredit your songwriting.’
I totally agree with you. i had a conversation about songwriting and sadly it was reduced to clickbait. I apologise unreservedly and unconditionally. The last thing I would want to do is discredit your songwriting. I hope you understand. – Damon

Jack Antonoff, who has collaborated with Swift on her albums 1989 and folklore, was quick to defend Swift. He said, ‘I’ve never met damon albarn and he’s never been to my studio but apparently he knows more than the rest of us about all those songs taylor writes and brings in. Herb.’
Meanwhile, editor and Columbia journalism professor Marlow Stern expressed that the trend of celebrities accusing publications of posting the “shit they clearly said” has to stop. He also posted a screenshot of the interview, showing Albarn’s firm reply on Swift not being a songwriter.
Fans were quick to defend Swift and made #TaylorWritesHerOwnSongs trend. The 32-year-old singer is the first and only solo woman artist to win the Grammy for Album of the Year three times for her solo recordings. She has also won a total of 11 Grammy Awards from 41 nominations.
