Filipinos can now use this election fact-checking website

There are countless misleading posts that people encounter on their news feeds. But since the 2022 elections are approaching, Filipinos need to be more vigilant on what they consume online. On Monday, The University of the Philippines (UP) has relaunched the country’s fact-checking platform to combat election-related disinformation.

Initially launched in 2019, Tsek.ph will verify and fack-check information such as platforms, campaigns promises, and election-related statements of candidates. It will also debunk false narratives from personalities, government agencies, news media, and election-related posts on social media and blogs.

The site will rate the reports by classifying its claims with the following: accurate, false, misleading, no basis, or needs context.

For example, there is a post excusing Presidential aspirant Bongbong Marcos from the guilty verdict of his 1995 tax evasion case, since he was supposedly exiled in the United States. This was marked as ‘false’ by the site, noting that Marcos lived in the Philippines from 1982 to 1985 and even held a local government position at the time. There are also several sources included as proof.

Tsek.ph is a project under the University’s Office of the Vice President for Public Affairs and spearheaded by the Department of Journalism under the College of Mass Communication. It was initiated to “counter disinformation and provide the public with verified information.”

The Asian Center for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Trinity University of Asia Communication Department, UP Department of Journalism’s Fact Check Patrol and FactRackers, UP Los Baños, and the University of Santo Tomas are also among its partners.

Meanwhile, the site also collaboared with civil society groups Akedemiya at Bayan Kontra Disimpormasyon at Dayaan (ABKD) and Fact Check Philippines.

Baybars Örsek, director of the International Fact-Checking Network said, ‘This global collaboration effort is an important reminder of the importance of working together when facts are under attack, and fact-checking is needed more than ever.’
