Thailand’s plant parents can soon grow cannabis at home

Growing cannabis a.k.a. marijuana in the backyard isn’t something that the usual gardening enthusiasts do. But plantitas and plantitos in Thailand can soon do it since the country’s narcotics board said it would dismiss cannabis from its drugs list, allowing households to grow the plant.

Under the new rule, individuals can produce cannabis plants at home, provided that they notify their local government beforehand. Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul also said the plant isn’t allowed to be used for commercial purposes without additional licenses.

The measure must be published in the country’s official Royal Gazette and 120 days should pass before home cannabis plants will become legal.

Thailand was named as the first Southeast Asian country to legalize marijuana in 2018 for medical use and research only. While the new rule of growing cannabis at home isn’t illegal anymore, the health ministry is set to present to parliament a separate draft bill this week. It contains details on the legal use of cannabis, including its production and commercial use.

The draft bill punishes those who cultivate cannabis without notifying the government with a fine of up to 20,000 baht (P31,076) and stipulates a fine of up to 300,000 baht (P46,615) or three years behind bars, or both, for selling it without a license.

The move is the current step in Thailand’s objective to boost cannabis as a cash crop. Around a third of its labor force works in agriculture, according to the World Bank.
