‘Drive My Car’ makes history as Japan’s first best picture Oscar nominee

Countless books-to-film adaptations have hit the big screen, but the Haruki Murakami-based movie Drive My Car surely captivated cinephiles. Not only that, but it also sparked cinematic history for being the first Japanese film to land an Oscar Nomination for Best Picture.

The Ryusuke Hamaguchi-directed movie also clinched three nominations in other categories such as the Best International Feature Film, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay, together with his co-screenwriter Takamaase Oe.

Only after four years of debuting as a commercial film director, Hamaguchi has already gained prizes from other international film festivals. Before entering the 94th Oscar Awards,  Drive My Car also happened to win Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globe Awards and Best Screenplay at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.

Drive My Car

Drive My Car is an adaptation of Murakami’s international bestselling short story of the same name. Japanese leading man Hidetoshi Nishijima plays Yusuke Kafuku, a stage actor and director trying to get through the sudden death of his wife.

When Kafuki traveled to Hiroshima to direct a performance of Anton Chekov’s Uncle Vanya, a young woman was assigned as his chauffeur. She would drive him around the city in a bright red Saab 900. During the ride, both of them formed a connection, with secrets and confessions revealed.
