First ‘anal sex’ condom approved in the US to avoid STIs

Last year, a Malaysian gynecologist claimed to have created the world’s first unisex condom. But recently, there’s another win for sexual health experts: the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first condom for anal intercourse.

Health agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has always advised people to use condoms for anal sex. However, regulators worldwide previously allowed companies to market their products as “safe and effective”, but for vaginal use.

Agency Scientist Courtney Lias said in a statement, ‘The FDA’s authorization of a condom that is specifically indicated, evaluated and labeled for anal intercourse may improve the likelihood of condom use during anal intercourse.’

The authorized use of Global Protection Corp’s One Male Condom on Feb. 23 follows a clinical trial by Emory University. It involved 252 men who have sex with men and 252 men who have sex with women. The participants are aged between 18 and 54.

The FDA stated it would accept a 5% failure rate, which earlier trials had failed to execute. The limit was surpassed in the new study, with a failure rate of 0.68% for anal and 1.89% for vaginal intercourse.

The greenlight of the condom was also considered an unmet public health need since unprotected anal sex holds the greatest risk of HIV transmission through sexual exposure. One study discovered that 69% of men who have sex with men would use condoms more often if they were FDA-indicated.

One Male Condom is also revealed to prevent sexually transmitted infections, and can also be a contraceptive in vaginal sex. Infectious disease doctor Monica Gandhi said, ‘The important thing about condoms is they don’t just prevent HIV, but they prevent gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis.’
