PH has one of the world’s highest number of female inventors

A few days after the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) announced the countries with the most female inventors. On the list, the Philippines ranked the second highest, just next to Cuba.

Database company Statista’s data shows that the 38 percent share was composed of Filipina inventors among applicants for international patents in 2021. Meanwhile, Cuba topped the list and landed at 53 percent. Both countries exceeded the global average share of 17 percent.

When it comes to the rankings of other nations, Portugal was the highest-ranking European country in the top 3. The U.S. was at 16%, which remained near the global average percentage. Germany, Italy, and Sweden crawled behind the 17% mark. Interestingly, Japan was at the last spot at just 10%.

WIPO works through the Patent Cooperation Treaty, which helps individuals and institutions in pursuing patent protection for their inventions. The Switzerland-based agency’s data ranked 74 countries based on how extensive a percentage of those that applied for patents in 2021 were female.

In March 2021, the Department of Science and Technology Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) has offered technology support for Filipina social entrepreneurs.  It launched an initiative to bring together government agencies and private organizations to help women-led social enterprises.
