The Internet exploded with Toni Gonzaga memes

It might have been another ordinary day for some, but Feb. 8 marked the first day of the formal campaign period for national positions. While all eyes were on the leading candidates, online users were also observant of who local stars support.

One of the celebrities that caught people’s attention was Toni Gonzaga. She hosted the proclamation rally of the UniTeam Alliance’s presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and his running mate, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte. It was held at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.

There were thousands of attendees who danced to Bagong Lipunan, which was the marching song reminiscent of the martial law years under the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos. The song’s modern version was used by Marcos Jr. in his campaign.

When the track finished playing, Gonzaga exclaimed, ‘Tapos na. May nanalo na. Tapos na ang laban! (It’s over. He has won. The fight is over).’

During the program, Gonzaga also introduced Rep. Rodante Marcoleta, a Congress member who denied ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal in 2020. Back then, Gonzaga said in a statement, ‘Sa lahat ng nasa posisyon ngayon, hindi namin makakalimutan ang ginawa n’yo sa mga trabahador ng ABS-CBN.’

Gonzaga was a long-time host of the broadcasting network’s show Pinoy Big Brother. The shutdown also resulted in over 11,000 employees losing their jobs in the middle of a pandemic.

Marcos Jr. was the “ninong” or wedding sponsor of Gonzaga and her husband, film director Paul Soriano. In September 2021, she also drew flack for an interview with Marcos Jr. in her online talk show called Toni Talks. Meanwhile, Soriano recently directed the UniTeam ad.

As much as Gonzaga’s fans were disappointed, they were also quick to express their reactions online. There were many memes of her characters in previous films including Four Sisters and A Wedding.
