What are ‘motherhood statements’ and why do politicians love them?

It’s officially election season. With it comes politicians and their grand promises of unity, peace, prosperity, and fortune. If you slightly gagged at the thought, you might be tired of ‘motherhood statements.’

Motherhood statements are defined as a ‘vague, feel-good platitude, especially one made by a politician, that few people would disagree with.’ It’s similar to when a Miss Universe contestant answers the Q&A with ‘World Peace.’ Only psychopaths would oppose the thought of living in harmony, so the term becomes a generally accepted answer.

But politics is much more complex than beauty pageants, for it involves policies that address immediate concerns that determine the future of a nation. Motherhood statements must give way to actionable programs, because sweeping promises do not feed a hungry stomach.

The popularity of Motherhood statements

Motherhood statements might seem vague and general, but why are they still the go-to of many politicians? It’s for the same reason that Tiktok and 30-second videos are hot commodities; they are easy to consume.

Lectures are boring. Facts and figures? Yawn. In a time of shrinking attention spans, many don’t give a crap if you assisted in a crisis or launched housing programs. Is your resumé so packed it looks like an infographic? Well, f*ck you for being too competent.

It’s a sad sight because strategy and principles give direction, set expectations, and enable people to make informed decisions. Generic motherhood statements sound great, but they don’t answer the most pressing question: ‘How?’

When someone promises they’ll eradicate crime in three to six months, our response should’ve been ‘How?’. When they say homelessness will disappear in six years, we should ask, ‘With what money?.’ And when they preach unity, we question their hesitance to engage in debates and discussion.

Learning a lesson

After six years of grand promises that ultimately fell flat, here’s hoping we learned our lesson. We could use fewer personalities making motherhood statements about unity, and more competent people with actual plans and programs on how to make it happen.

After all, it’s easy to criticize what’s wrong and point out what needs to be done. But to actually map out a plan and execute it effectively? That’s a different story.
