2022 Oscar moments that the Internet celebrated with memes

Can’t wrap your head around the viral video of Will Smith’s dispute with Chris Rock to an Encanto song getting a remix? Well, if you don’t have the time to follow the 94th Academy Awards, then maybe this rundown below could give you a quick glimpse of what happened in this year’s Oscars.

Yup, Will Smith really slapped Chris Rock

During the event, one of the moments that shocked the audience and people online was when Will Smith slapped Christ Rock. Chris was about to present the documentary feature winner and made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith as “G.I. Jane”, which is a quip to her shaved head. Jada previously shared that she is battling with alopecia, an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss.

Will walked up to the stage and slapped Christ on the face because of the joke. The actor then went back to his seat and shouted, ‘Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth.’

While some people found the altercation entertaining and compared it to a Euphoria scene showing Maddy and Cassie’s fight, other people said it’s not acceptable to show this type of “violent” behavior on live television.

The Academy posted a statement on social media and clarified that it “does not condone violence of any form.”

Zendaya and Andrew Garfield’s red carpet moment

Zendaya turned heads while she was on the red carpet with a fellow Spider-Man actor. Nope, it wasn’t Tom Holland, but Andrew Garfield. Both of them took a couple of photos, which served as a cute mini-reunion for Marvel fans. As expected, many memes were scattered on the internet related to their quick interaction.

Garfield was nominated for best actor in a leading role for Tick, Tick…Boom!, while Zendaya was part of the cast of Dune, which received 10 nominations.

Megan Thee Stallion performed an iconic Encanto song

If you’ve seen Disney’s Encanto, you’ll agree how all the songs are absolute bops – and one of which is We Don’t Talk About Bruno. Five members of the film’s cast such as Adassa, Stephanie Beatriz, Mauro Castillo, Carolina Gaitán, and Diane Guerrero held the first live performance of the track during the star-studded event.

But plot twist: the crowd witnessed an unexpected remix of the hit song when Megan Thee Satallion started spitting bars. Part of her lyrics went, ‘Stars everywhere, I need to see Oscars Zendaya over there / Oh no, we got three hosts. These women are the best and they killin all the jokes.’

Many online users were expecting the song to be carried out by the OG cast members only, so not everyone was a fan of the surprise rendition.

Winning ‘Best Director’ for two years straight

The Power of the Dog was helmed by Jane Campion, who took home Best Director, making her the first female director in Oscar history to have won the award in back-to-back years.

In her winning speech, Campion expressed that her fellow nominees are “all extraordinarily talented.” She added, ‘I love directing because it’s a deep dive into story, yet the task of manifesting a world can be overwhelming.’

‘The sweet thing is, I’m not alone,’ she added. ‘On The Power of the Dog I worked with actors I move to call my friends. They met the challenge of this story with the depth of their gifts.’

Kristen Stewart won the hearts of her fans

Kristen Stewart showed up at the Academy Awards with her fiancée Dylan Meyer. She traded the usual floor-length gowns for a cropped tux and shorts from Chanel. After making an appearance on the red carpet, she was caught quickly switching her heels to flats.

Stewart was nominated for Best Actress for her Princess Diana role in Spencer. Many online users were manifesting her win, but she didn’t land the award. Jessica Chastain brought home the statuette for her role in The Eyes of Tammy Faye. But hey, Stewart’s fans were still happy about her appearance – it even trended on Twitter.

CODA makes history… again

Another historic win at this year’s Oscars was CODA receiving the award for Best Picture. It is marked as the first film distributed by a streaming service to win the said prize.

The Sian Heder-directed film also won two other categories that it was nominated in. They won Best Adapted Screenplay and Troy Kotsur won Best Supporting Actor, which makes him the first deaf man to win an Oscar for Acting.

Amy Schumer jokes

Amy Schumer co-hosted the Academy Awards together with Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall. Their opening monologue included a witty joke that said hiring them as a trio to host was “cheaper than hiring one man.”

The hosts took the chance to also say something directed towards a different award show: ‘You know what’s in the In Memoriam this year?’ asked Schumer. ‘The Golden Globes.’

Schumer also poked fun towards Smith and Rock’s moment. Following the incident, she asked if she missed out on anything because it felt like the event had a “different vibe”.

Another actor she made a gag about was Leonardo DiCaprio’s Netflix movie. Schumer said, ‘Don’t Look Up is nominated. I guess the Academy members don’t look up… reviews.’
