Luke Espiritu chose violence at his Reddit AMA

Senatorial candidate Luke Espiritu appeared on our radars after a spirited performance at the SMNI debates, which saw him trade jabs with former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque and suspended lawyer Larry Gadon.

The roast – or the ‘double cremation’ – didn’t end at the March 3 debates. Espiritu, who runs under Leody De Guzman’s Partido Lakas ng Masa, took to Reddit to expound on his platform, while throwing a few jabs along the way.

Espiritu and his advice to law students

u/ToxRanoy probably expected a motivational quote after asking Espiritu for his advice for struggling law students. The labor lawyer multitasked by doling out some words of wisdom, while continuing his roast of Roque and Gadon.

On the behind-the-scenes of SMNI debates

SMNI has become a recognizable name in the past weeks, mainly because an FBI fugitive and Marcos supporter owns it. Redditor u/reliabilityprince asked what it was like behind the scenes of the debates, with Espiritu responding that he didn’t socialize much, considering his ‘allergic reaction to scoundrels and hypocrites’.

Espiritu on his viral fame

Aside from his back-and-forths with Roque and Gadon, Espiritu received praise for his aggressive stance on the issue of Marcos Sr. and Martial Law.

Reacting to his newfound recognition, he said he felt ‘bitin’ in expounding why the Marcos regime was not a ‘Golden Age’. He also knew that ‘exposing’ Gadon and Roque would cause a stir; he just didn’t expect that he would be involved.

On civil unions vs. same-sex marriages

On the topic of LGBTQ+ unions, Espiritu opts for same-sex marriages, calling civil unions an act of ‘pandering to conservative elements in our society’.

‘As it stands, marriage can already be celebrated religiously (by a priest) or secularly (by a judge). Why create a false category?’

On who will be covered by the proposed ‘wealth tax’

Progressive labor leaders have called on imposing a wealth tax for the country’s upper class. It’s a proposal that comes with concerns from those that aren’t your Ramon Angs and Lucio Tans.

Espiritu clarified that the proposed tax will cover the 50 richest families, with the funds serving as post-pandemic economic rebuilding. A 1-5% tax on those with ‘accumulated assets of P100 million upwards.’
