Netflix has no chill; it’s testing a fee for ‘shared passwords’

There are many things that you get to share with both friends and family. But if one of them is your Netflix password, then you might reconsider. The streaming giant’s recent news release said that it will start testing ways to ensure users who share their accounts outside the household will pay for additional members.

Chengyi Long, director of product innovation, said the sharing of accounts with other users outside the household has affected Netflix’s “ability to invest in great new TV and films.” The platform’s terms of service state an account “may not be shared with individuals beyond your household.”

Netflix is just doing a test run of the new prices to “add an extra member” on standard and premium plans. While you’re worried that this might break the bank, it will only roll out first in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru. The plans on expanding the new feature beyond those countries remain unclear.

Long explained the two new features meant to address the issue: the ability to pay for sub-accounts, and the choice to switch an existing user profile into its own account or sub-account. This option will launch in the next few weeks in the three test countries.

Users residing in the test countries will be notified if they share their profiles with friends or anyone outside of the household. They also might need to verify their account to log in.

‘We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans,’ the company said in a statement. ‘While these have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared.’
