This Martial Law-based film will stream on YouTube

This March has been quite a good month for fans of local films. Over a week ago, a film festival honored National Women’s Month by allowing viewers to binge-watch 11 movies for free online. On Wednesday, director Kip Oebanda announced that his film Liway will also be available to stream on his YouTube channel beginning March 18.

According to Liway’s teaser description, viewers will get to have a great viewing experience since it’s ad-free until April. The film is based on Oebanda’s real-life experience with his mother. It stars Glaiza de Castro as the titular character, Kenken Nuyad as Dakip (the child version of the filmmaker), and Dominic Roco as Dakip’s father Commander Toto.

The film is set during Ferdinand Marcos’ Martial Law, where it follows a boy named Dakip, who lives in a prison camp with his mother, an anti-Marcos dissident known as Commander Liway. She tried to distract Dakip from the challenges of living in a prison camp, so she tells him stories to protect him from the realities of a political prisoner’s life.

In August 2018, Liway first premiered as part of the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, where it eventually won the special jury award and the audience choice award under the full-length feature film category.

Before the announcement on Liway premiering for free, its official Facebook page posted a statement on Martial Law.
