The Internet is a simp for VP Leni’s daughter after Boy Abunda’s interview

Several presidential debates have been carried out, and a couple more will air before the national elections. Following the interviews featuring the aspirants, The Boy Abunda Channel now has a series focusing on the wives and children of those who are running.

On March 16, Vice President Leni Robredo’s daughters Janine Patricia “Tricia” Robredo and Jessica Marie “Aika” Robredo got the chance to sit down and talk to Abunda. The host asked them questions from what it’s like growing up with their mom to stances on certain social issues.

There’s an ‘Election Ban’ on love

There are many online users who posted that they have been simping over Tricia, and Abunda couldn’t help but ask if she and Aika were single. But Aika jokingly responded that dating is prohibited while their mom is campaigning, ‘Election ban ngayon. Ano yan, naka hold on yan. Kasama siya sa listahan ng election ban.’

Meanwhile, Tricia shared that VP Leni was cool with hearing stories about their past relationships. She recalled, ‘Naalala ko, nakakatawa, noong first relationship ko, and haba haba ng explanation ko. Tapos sagot niya (VP Leni) lang ay “oks”.’

Aika, the eldest sister, added that their mother was always just the right kind of “friendly” when meeting their partners. She said, ‘Parati niya kasi sinasabi na confident siya na the kind of example na she and papa set for us, is okay naman. And alam na niya rin na hindi kami mag se-settle for less than the kind of love that they taught us.’

The pressure on being daughters of the VP

The Robredo sisters are not taking advantage of the last name or status of their mother. Tricia, a medical doctor, explained, ‘Di ako nagpapakilala bilang doktor Robredo sa ospital. Nagpapakilala po ako bilang Dr. Tricia, so [that] whatever they say about my work, it’s because of the kind of work I put out. Not because of my name.’

Aika agrees with her sister that they are their own person since she also grew up dealing with the pressure too. She said, ‘Kasi kung pumalpak ka, sasabihin na ano ba naman to, anak niya tapos palpak pero pag nag excel ka naman, ah kaya yan magaling kasi.. So kami, paghusayan nalang natin para wala kang talo either way.’

Aika earned her master’s degree from Harvard University and now works as Executive Director of Restart Micro-Enterprise, a non-government organization that provides funds to microentrepreneurs affected by disasters. She usually assumes people she works with don’t know that she’s the VP’s daughter, and only acknowledges it when someone brings it up.

On same-sex marriage, divorce, and abortion

Just like every other family, kids and parents have different opinions on certain things. Aika and Tricia share the same stand as their mother with same-sex unions. They also agreed that existing policies and the current process to get an annulment should be improved, rather than implementing divorce.

When it comes to abortion, VP Leni has been vocal that she’s conflicted in legalizing it, but is willing to discuss. Tricia said, ‘Yung abortion po kasi it’s not something we’d choose for ourselves… For example ako po, kapag nagrorotate ako sa hospitals, may nakikita akong mga batang nabubuntis tapos hindi naman nila kasalanan. Pwedeng ang nakabuntis sa kanya tito or tatay.’

Tricia added that it would be “unfair” for the mother to blame it on the child if she can’t push through with her pregnancy. Aika revealed that they opened up this issue with their mom even at home. They explained how women have to seek “underground” means to do it since it’s still illegal.

Aika said, ‘This is something we discuss with her and she listens to us. Parang pareho naman ‘yung upbringing namin na probably it’s something we would not choose for ourselves pero paano naman yung iba? It goes beyond us.’

‘Pero yung pinaka-reassuring sa amin is she continues to listen to us and if magkakaroon ng policy related to it, I would think na ‘yung mass consultation, ‘yung pagkakaintindi, lahat yun inaaral,’ she added.

VP Leni is unfazed by trolls

Abunda pointed out that receiving backlashes are inevitable, but Aika said, ‘Una po siguro, lugi yung trolls sa kanya. Hindi po talaga siya na-aapektuhan.‘ But Tricia admitted that there are times when they, as daughters, think the words thrown at their mother are “unfair”.

Tricia pointed out how there is no more space for hate since the country is already “divided”. She said, ‘Wala po tayong mararating if mag resort tayo sa name calling… or meron tayo laging moral ascendancy or superiority over other people. For me, if you want to win them over, that’s not how you do it.’

‘Katulad ni mama talaga, mas maging bukas,’ she added. ‘Kasi sabi niya lagi na radical love. Kahit sobrang hirap na maging mabait, at maging mapag pasensya, always choose kindness pa rin and always choose a more loving option.’

Aika added that VP Leni is “deadset focused” on her job that’s why she’s unaffected by negative comments. She said, ‘I think pare pareho yung gusto natin mangyari sa ating bansa or sa ating mga buhay. Iba lang yung means na naiisip natin para marating yun kaya siguro invivation lang ito na maging mas open, na mas makinig sa iba pang options out there.’

Why should Filipinos vote for VP Leni?

Tricia said that it’s a bonus to see VP Leni as a mother, but objectively speaking, she believes her mom’s accomplishments say a lot. She said, ‘Yung mga programa niya po talaga. Lahat naman po ginagawa niya just to ensure na everyone lives the life na decent and something that they deserve… She spends a lot of hours consulting with people, studying how best to go about a certain problem.’

Aiks sees her mom’s life mission as the main preparation for the job. She explained, ‘Sa tingin ko yung lifetime of preparation niya na unintentional at hindi deliberate, tingin ko walang substitute yun sa readiness niya to take on a bigger role kung siya yung mabigyan ng chance na manalo sa May.’

Aika also said VP Leni doesn’t see herself as a “superhero” who would save everyone. She said, ‘I think yung important leadership trait niya, she inspires other people to act as well. Kasi tingin ko yun lang yung only way din para malampasan natin yung napaka raming problema na haharapin natin.’

‘Kung ma-inspire niya yung napaka raming groups, napaka raming tao to come togeher and work together. Tingin ko yun yung best fighting chance nating lahat,’ she continued.
