These Filipinas share how to make it in the PH podcast scene

Throughout the years, women have continued to prove how they can make a mark on the things they pursue. When it comes to the local audio scene, many female singers break new grounds in the music space and podcast hosts inspire fellow women with what they put out in the world.

During this year’s International Women’s Day, Spotify celebrated its community of Filipina artists, creators, and listeners with fresh content on EQUAL Philippines and Pinay Voices. It reinforces its dedication to fostering gender equity by spotlighting its year-long initiative EQUAL, a space dedicated to female voices in music and podcasts.

Spotify also held a talk with March’s EQUAL ambassador Keiko Necessario, podcast host Hannah Pangilinan, radio DJ and fitness instructor Hannah Bacani, and Spotify Asia’s Head of Music Kossy Ng. It was moderated by Joyce Pring, who also happens to have a podcast on the platform.

In the panel discussion, they shared important messages for young women who are still making their way in the audio scene  – whether it’s releasing new music or speaking about inspirational discussions.

Where do women stand in the audio space?

Spotify conducted a global study on the representation of women in the music industry. It showed how only 1 in 5 artists on the charts are women. In the Philippines, there was a 35% female share in streams in 2021, reflecting the opportunity for equal representation in the music scene.

Kossy shared the artists and creators you listen to should reflect the diversity of the world you live in. She noted, ‘Spotify is committed to being a driver of progress, both on and off the platform.’

When you’re starting out, it’s close to impossible to attract a million listeners at once, and it might not seem like an easy journey. But Keiko reminded that aspiring singers should start saying yes to beginnings. She recalled, ‘When I started, I really didn’t know where I was supposed to be. I just kind of like went with the flow.’

But now, the singer discovered what direction she wants to take her music. She advised, ‘Create what you want to see in the world – about love, hope. Just be encouraging of yourself as well. and other people.’

Your purpose in doing a podcast

You can’t go viral overnight before putting in hard work. Pausecast host Hannah said it’s different to record a podcast compared to making vlogs since it also takes a lot of behind-the-scenes preparation. She can’t record if she’s not in a good mental state, ‘It’s really difficult for me to do that. And I don’t like doing that because I’ll be putting up a front.’

Hannah also stresses that what you share online should reflect who you are beyond the screen since you’re conveying topics close to your heart. She added, ‘It’s going to be really difficult to open that up to a large audience if you aren’t prepared in your own personal life.’

Being one of the leading podcasters in the country, Pring admitted she does feel pressured at times to create authentic and purposeful content for her show Adulting With Joyce Pring. But at the same time, she loves how a lot of creators are emerging.

She recalled her main reason for creating her own audio show, ‘It was just the intention of opening up space for people to actually start having deep important conversations of what it means to be a growing woman in the Philippines.’

While creating music or content is important, you shouldn’t forget to put the listeners or your audience at the center. Bacani shared an important insight: staying authentic is a really big thing. You can really tell if someone’s being real or not. She said, ‘When you show your vulnerability, it translates really well to the audience.’

The radio DJ added that it only takes that one person who’s going to ignite that spark in you. She said, ‘If there’s one person that can feel touched and can feel connected to your experience, I think that’s a powerful thing.’
