VP Leni is the most searched presidential bet on Google

Several surveys have already been conducted to gauge who will take the seat at the MalacaƱang Palace after the upcoming elections. The recent results revealed that Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. was taking the lead. But Vice President Leni Robredo is currently the top bet on Google Trends’ election page.

Political analyst Andrew Masigan explained surveys give people a glimpse of where candidates stand at the time it was conducted, while Google Trends predicts election results through the online behavior of the voting public over a period of time.

In a press statement, Google said that ‘Google Trends Philippine Elections’ was made as a tool for the media to find data for stories related to the running candidates.

In the tech giant’s recent results, Robredo has now earned a 45% share of searches, followed by former Bongbong with 26%, Sen. Manny Pacquiao and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno both with 12%, and Sen. Panfilo Lacson with 5%.

Meanwhile, tapping the ‘Explore’ option under the candidate’s names will reveal the regions where they were the most popular during the specified time frame. Robredo’s related search was Cavite Gov. Jonvic Remulla of Cavite, whose family is supporting Bongbong.

Remulla’s brother, Cavite Rep. Crispin Remulla, has accused around 47,000 attendees of Robredo’s General Trias rally of being paid P500 to attend. During a forum on March 8, Robredo denied the allegations, ‘Insulto sa mga province mates. Nandoon ako, nakita ko ’yung tao. ’Yung energy level ng tao, from start to finish, ’pag bayad ’yata hindi ’yun ganun.’

When it comes to the vice-presidential race, Google Trends’ results show Sara Duterte was at the top with 44% followed by Kiko Pangilinan with 30%, Tito Sotto with 15%, Walden Bello with 9%, and Lito Atienza with 2%.

The page also presented data on the most searched policy issues in different locations of the country including education, drugs, economy, tourism, agriculture, justice, and poverty.

Google stressed how the page is “not a poll or survey and does not reflect voting intentions.” A rise in a specific search query does not hint that a candidate is somehow “popular” or “winning”.
