EU grants six PH schools P12M for women’s access to legal programs

The European Union’s (EU’s) Governance in Justice Programme (GOJUST) spent International Women’s Day by awarding P12.1 million to six universities from the Philippines. The grant will be utilized by women for access to justice at the center of their clinical legal education programs.

EU Ambassador to the PH Luc Véron said in a virtual grant signing ceremony that gender equality is one of the EU’s core values. He said, ‘The European Union has been a committed partner to the Philippine’s Justice Sector reform since 2006.’

‘Our engagement stems from the importance we attach to democracy, human rights and the rule of law,’ Véron added. He also said that he is looking forward to the outcome of the six universities. The grant was signed by representatives from each school below:

-Western Visayas State University
-Adamson University
-University of San Carlos
-University of the Visayas
-Father Saturnino Urios University
-St. Louis University

The mentioned universities will implement the Clinical Legal Education Program (CLEP) of the Supreme Court as a bridge to promote access to justice for women and other vulnerable groups. Véron said, ‘Ensuring women and girls have equal access to justice is fundamental to building a fair, inclusive, prosperous, and peaceful society.’

The CLEP is a credit-earning teaching course with the goal of providing law students with knowledge for the application of the law, delivery of legal services, and promotion of social justice, especially to the marginalized sectors.
