After ‘X’, Elon Musk and Grimes named their second child ‘Y’

A person’s name really leaves an impression. Earlier this year, a man named Kovid had to clarify that he wasn’t related to the COVID-19 virus. But when it comes to unusual baby names, Elon Musk and Grimes’ second child would top the list their daughter is named Exa Dark Sideræl or simply just Y.

In a cover story with Vanity Fair, Grimes has revealed that she and Musk welcomed their baby girl, but this time with a surrogate, last December. They went with that arrangement since the singer had fears of facing similar pregnancy complications with their firstborn.

Grimes shared the story behind Y’s full name. Exa is “a reference to the supercomputing term exaFLOPS (the ability to perform 1 quintillion floating-point operations per second).” Dark stands for the unknown, the absence of photons, and dark matter is the “beautiful mystery of our universe.

Meanwhile, Sideræl stemmed from Grimes’ fave Lord of the Rings character, Galadriel. It’s pronounced as  “sigh-deer-ee-el”, which has a more “elven” spelling of sidereal – meaning “the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time.”

During the interview, Grimes also mentioned that she worries how her daughter’s name might be “a little boring.” But you probably wouldn’t be surprised hearing that from a parent who named their first child  X Æ A-12 Musk.

The singer and Tesla Founder’s one-year-old son’s name X is pronounced as the letter, Æ is a ligature known as ash, and A-12 is said to be a reference to CIA spacecraft Archangel – thus, ‘X Ash Archangel Musk’.
