7-eleven urges Filipinos to check their ‘Speak Cup’ receipts

Do people still look at the receipt of their purchases these days? With online shopping taking over, it seems like they just instantly pay for the total with one click. But when it comes to buying drinks, 7-eleven is urging its customers to take a closer look at their receipts.

The convenience store launched its Speak Cup, which has a bar code that people can scan to vote for the presidential bet’s photo seen on their cup. This is in line with their goal to increase voter engagement and awareness for the upcoming 2022 elections.

While selecting a candidate through the cup is an informal way of voting, several online users claimed that their receipts don’t match the candidate on their drink cup. On March 11, 7-eleven Philippines released a statement following the issue and also reminded customers to always verify their receipt.

The convenience store chain also stated it would post the promotion processes, methodologies, and policies on its website “in the spirit of transparency.”

Under the store’s 7-election website, the Daily CUPdates section shows the candidates’ ranking based on the percentage of drink sales. Under the Results Breakdown, it presents the specific number of beverages sold. The site also has a Detailed Data tab, which shows the location and number of daily votes by customers.

The cups display the names and photos of the following presidential candidates: Sen. Ping Lacson, ex-senator and late dictator’s son Bongbong Marcos, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, Sen. Manny Pacquiao, and Vice President Leni Robredo. There is also an “undecided” cup for those who have yet to decide on who to vote for.

As of writing, 7-eleven’s breakdown shows Bongbong leading with 82,153, followed by Robredo with 67,810. The “undecided” cup option was at 35,052. Moreno follows with 14,401, then Lacson with 8,593 and Pacquiao has 8,079.

7-eleven claims that its Speak Cup campaign is an “unofficial” and “unscientific” way to survey Filipinos. The convenience store stresses that this is their way for people to promote their chosen candidates in a “fun way”. However, the sentiments of users on the Internet noted that the results should still be fair.
