Rowena Guanzon is the Internet’s ‘Patron Saint of Bardagulan’

You might have heard the name Rowena Guanzon thrown around online. Most people probably know her as that fearless poll commissioner at the height of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s disqualification case earlier this year. But upon retirement, Guanzon got Internet’s attention after her snappy comebacks to those who try to criticize her.

Who is Rowena Guanzon?

Guanzon was appointed as Commissioner to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in 2015. A week before her retirement, she disclosed her vote to disqualify Marcos Jr. from the upcoming presidential elections, over “moral turpitude” for failing to pay income taxes in the 1980s. She also believes there was a “conspiracy” behind the delay of the release of the resolution on the late dictator’s son so her vote won’t be counted.

Beyond the DQ case, Guanzon had already had a lot of accomplishments attached to her name. She was a litigation lawyer, writer, law professor – known as an expert in the field of gender equality and laws on violence against women, and she was previously the Commissioner of the Commission on Audit in 2013.

The 64-year-old finished an economics degree from the University of the Philippines (UP), then graduated in the top ten of her class in the UP College of Law. She even has a Master in Public Administration from Harvard University.

Guanzon also came from a well-respected family. She was the daughter of one of the country’s first female politicians and World War II hero a.k.a. Elvira Guanzon, and her father was former Judge Sixto Guanzon Sr. Her parents taught her “to fight against boys”, as she grew up with five brothers and two sisters.

Patron Saint of Bardagulan

While Guanzon is recognized for her legislative and government-related works, many online users have an unspoken agreement that she’s the Patron Saint of Bardagulan. After all, she doesn’t back down on all the trolls or oblivious comments that she receives on social media.

Bardagulan loosely translates to a fight or feisty comebacks. If you want to see those moments where Guanzon replies to those who try to roast her, check out some of the posts and screenshots below:
