This study proves that sleeping could help you lose weight

There are many interesting discoveries like how men with dog photos on dating apps are a better choice or how talking with strangers may be therapeutic. But a recent study by the University of Chicago explored how the quality and duration of people’s sleep could help cut calories. Does this mean you’ll put your daily cardio on pause?

The new research stated that sleep could “be a viable intervention for obesity prevention and weight loss programs.” It explained that people who usually dozed off for less than 6.5 hours a night lose an average of 270 calories from their daily intake when they sleep for an additional 1.2 hours.

A trial for the study involved 80 overweight adults aged 21 to 40, who have a body mass index between 25 and 29.9. Half of the volunteers were randomly assigned to have personalized sleep hygiene counseling, which helps in boosting the amount of time they slept each night.

The researchers didn’t ask the participants to limit their diets or adjust their workout routines. Each one of them also slept in their own beds and wore devices to track their sleep duration.

If this practice is maintained for over three years, the researchers believed that the calorie reduction could lead to losing around 12kg (26 lbs.), even if people don’t change their diet during the day. Other participants in the study ingested 500 fewer calories daily after their sleeping patterns got better.

While the research wasn’t developed to look at weight loss, the findings detected a drop in calories of the subjects within two weeks of adjusting their bedtime habits.
