TIL: Pepe Herrera got his name from Chel Diokno’s father

Chel Diokno was one of the candidates running in the 2019 senatorial election, but he didn’t make it to the race of 12. In 2021, the lawyer declared his intention to try again for the position. Many of his supporters were excited to hear his announcement and expressed that he still has their vote – one of which is local actor Pepe Herrera.

Herrera shared a lengthy post back in April 2019, which resurfaced a couple of days ago following comments from online users. With his comedic side still intact, he opened his story by saying, ‘Hindi lang si Ebe, Bullet, and Johnoy of #3D ang nagmamahal kay Chel D. because I also love the D!’

The 34-year-old revealed a moving reason why Chel will always have his vote. His parents were activists who were tortured during the country’s Martial Law era. A month before the 1986 EDSA Revolution, his father was “forcefully captured” for helping fishermen against a corrupt politician.

Herrera added how his father was set free, ‘Who defended him in court? Jose “Pepe” Diokno. One of the most competent Senators during the Golden Age of Senate. Sila nila Jovito Salonga ang Dream Team ng Senado nung Martial Law.’

The actor was born a year after his father was captured, and his parents were so thankful they named him “after their hero”. He shared, ‘Yes I was not named after Jose Rizal. Or Pepe Smith. I was named after the late senator Pepe Diokno.’

On March 12, Herrera clarified in a comment, ‘Hindi lang noong 1986 natorture ang parents ko at mga kaibigan nila… Nagfocus lang po doon sa pagkatorture sa erpat ko noong 1986 because that was the year that I was conceived after my father was released from prison.’

Herra shared how the son of his “katukayo” a.k.a. Chel is running for senator and described him as a “public servant” rather than a “politician”. He emphasized, ‘Napakalaki po ng pagkakaiba nun.’

‘Eto ang mga taong masarap suportahan ng walang bahid ng salapi,’ Herrera continued. He pointed out that he’ll be Chel’s “portable and mobile human poster”. The actor also said the poster he was holding was from 2019, ‘Pero ngayong 2022, #21 NA PO SI ATTY. CHEL. Please don’t forget.’

Chel has been a human rights lawyer for three decades and his current platform centers on justice and the COVID-19 response. It includes delivery of health services to Filipinos, small to medium enterprises affected by the pandemic, and children’s denied right to education due to the pandemic and the slow-paced vaccination program.
