Jericho Rosales is a ‘Best Actor’ int’l nominee for ‘Basurero’ role

Another month, another achievement for Philippine cinema. It seems like things are going well for Filipino filmmakers and actors as they have been gaining prestigious awards internationally. Recently, Jericho Rosales received a Best Actor nomination from the NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) for his leading role in the short film Basurero.

Apart from the actor’s nod, the 2019 film itself was also nominated under NFMLA’s International Drama category. On Friday, Rosales posted about their recognition on Instagram. He wrote, ‘This little jeepney made it to Hollywood! Cheers team!’

Basurero is a 17-minute fictional exposé inspired by actual events. The Eileen Cabiling-directed short follows the story of Bong (Rosales), a poor fisherman who struggles to make ends meet. He is forced to work as a ‘basurero’ and dump murdered bodies at times when their catch can’t sustain his sick daughter’s medication and other needs.

Speaking with Inquirer, Cabiling shared that the story came from her “desire to explore the postcolonist mentality of being Filipino.” She added, ‘The story was inspired by news of the day, but more importantly, I was drawn to the character’s struggle because I see this psychology in my own life and the historical forces shape so much of reality today.’

According to Variety, NFMLA backs emerging filmmakers and artists through screenings and events in Los Angeles. The Best of NFMLA nominees are composed of films that have screened as part of the non-profit organization’s monthly film festival selection in 2021.

NFMLA programming director Bojana Sandic said in a statement, ‘We are so proud to be able to highlight the incredible talent of all of our nominees, who have each created such inspiring work.’
