Gen Z people would choose to be unemployed than unhappy, says study

People have different ways of measuring happiness – some may base it on their relationships, financial stability, or social status. Meanwhile, in a recent study by employment agency Randstad, the Gen Z and Millenial respondents said that they would rather be unemployed than be unhappy with their lives.

The researchers behind the study conducted a survey including 35,000 employees from 34 countries and asked about their view of the world of work. 56% of the Gen Z respondents (aged 18 to 24) said that they would quit their job than compromise their personal lives.

Meanwhile, 43% of the respondents wouldn’t select an employer with conflicting social and environmental values, while 41% said that they wouldn’t choose a company where diversity and inclusion are not promoted. The study also noted that Gen Z and Millennials (25 to 34) chose ‘lifestyle’ and ‘happiness’ to be their top concern over the company’s values.

Other work priorities that were discovered in Randstad’s research were how employees seek the right monetary incentive and advantages such as more time off, better healthcare, or access to retirement benefits. Another factor is a flexible work location and working hours. But only around a quarter of employers currently offer both remote and flexi-time work.

One last important aspect is how 88% of the respondents across all age groups mentioned that they would like to take part in development programs if their company offered any. These would include workshops to advance their careers or seminars on how to achieve a better work/life balance.

In a statement, Randstad’s global CEO Sander van ‘t Noordende said their 2022 findings must serve as a “wake-up call for employers”. He added, ‘Young people want to bring their whole selves to work, which is reflected in their determination not to compromise their personal values when choosing an employer.’
