The Internet can’t believe teens refer to ‘GomBurZa’ as ‘MaJoHa’

In a recent clip from Pinoy Big Brother‘s (PBB) series featuring teen housemates, the reality show held a quiz that trended due to certain answers that surprised the Internet.

On April 10, PBB’s official Twitter page posted a video of two housemates competing during the history round. Host Robbi Domingo asked them a series of questions related to the Philippines, and one of which is, ‘Sina Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, at Jacinto Zamora ay mas kilala sa tawag na ________.’

A housemate was seen mouthing the correct term “GomBurZa.” But the two contestants who were playing, Kai Espenido and Gabb Skribikin, both mistakenly called the Filipino Catholic priests by their first names and said, “MaJoHa.”

GomBurZa were known as the three martyr priests who were executed by the Spaniards using a garrote in Bagumbayan in connection with the 1872 Cavite Mutiny.

In a separate video, Domingo asked what was considered the longest bridge in the Philippines. While one of the contestants answered “SLEX”, the other one got it right by saying it’s the San Juanico Bridge. The expressway also trended for a while.

Many online users were not really amused at how some were taking the contestants’ answers lightly. A user clarified that they’re not exactly throwing hate on Espenido and Skribikin, but questioning the country’s present education system.

At the moment, the Department of Education’s curriculum for Grade 1 to 10 students includes Araling Panlipunan. But the Philippine history subjects in the senior high school curriculum were removed. Meanwhile, The Commission on Higher Education has also removed Filipino classes as core subjects at the college level.
