Kai Sotto is ready for the 2022 NBA Draft

Many Filipino athletes are slowly making a mark in their respective sports, and Kai Sotto is one of them. The basketball player declared on April 28 that he’s all in for the 2022 NBA Draft. His announcement came after his season in Australia’s National Basketball League (NBL).

On Instagram, Sotto wrote a lengthy post and gave thanks to everyone who supported him. He added, ‘An athlete like me doesn’t get to a certain point of his journey without the help and support of many coaches, trainers, sponsors, media and even the army of bloggers who write about me endlessly!’

The 7-foot-3 player aims to be the first homegrown Filipino player in the NBA. But currently, there are two players of Filipino descent, Utah’s Jordan Clarkson and Houston’s Jalen Green, who are in the league.

After Sotto landed his first pro stint, he averaged 7.5 points on 50% shooting and 69% on free throws, on top of 4.5 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks in a little over 15 minutes per game. The Ateneo high school standout has also received the Fans’ Most Valuable Player award in the NBL given his growing international fanbase.

The 2022 NBA Rookie Draft will be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on June 23, 2022. There will be a total of 283 players, with 247 collegiate prospects and 36 international cagers.

Sotto is joining other NBL players including Luke Travers (Perth Wildcats), Hugo Besson and Ousmane Dieng (New Zealand Breakers), and Tom Digbeu (Brisbane Bullets).
