This Filipino co-produced film is part of the 2022 Cannes Film Fest
Countless films from the Philippines have entered and won international film festivals. There are also local actors who rightfully got recognized globally. Recently, the Filipino co-produced film Plan 75 landed as one of the entries in the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.
The Film Development Council of the Philippines announced the film’s entry to the festival and stated that it was co-produced by Filipino producer Alemberg Ang and Filipino production company Fusee, headed by Will Fredo. It’s the project of creators from Japan, France, and the Philippines.
Plan 75 made it to the film fest’s Un Certain Regard section, which contains 20 films with unusual styles and non-traditional stories to highlight emerging filmmakers that seek international recognition.
Written and directed by Chie Hayakawa, Plan 75 follows the narrative of a Japan-based fictional government that has a program that “encourages senior citizens to be voluntarily euthanized to remedy a super-aged society.” This feature celebrates Hayakawa’s directing debut.
Speaking with Inquirer Entertainment, Fredo explained that diving into co-production is still considered new to Filipinos, but the practice has already been present in Europe for a while. The move was a way to “catch up” with that type of business model in creating content. He added, ‘It is about time we should develop more of such content that’s geared toward global consumption.’
Fredo also said his goal as a producer is to guarantee that Filipino representation is present in future content. He shared, ‘I’m hoping when foreign viewers are getting used to us and our type of sensibilities, they’ll consume more of what we make here locally,” Fredo further said.’
Viewers can catch Plan 75 on the big screen during the festival, which will be held in Paris from May 17 to May 28.
