Ferdinand Marcos cameos in ‘Stranger Things’ scene related to ‘satanic worship’

Imelda Marcos was previously mentioned in the drama series The Crown, which highlighted her infamous shoe collection. Meanwhile, her husband and late dictator Ferdinand Marcos had a cameo in the latest season of Stranger Things.

In the first episode, Hellfire Club leader Eddie Munson was seen reading an issue of Newsweek magazine, with the ousted president on the cover. The cover story was titled, ‘Showdown: The Last Act in Manila.’

While the magazine cover was highlighted, Eddie read a piece about the Dungeons and Dragons game, which was referred to as “The Devil’s Game”. He read, ‘Studies have linked violent behavior to the game saying it promotes satanic worship, ritual sacrifice, sodomy, suicide, and even murder!’

The original cover of the Newsweek March 1986 issue

The 1986 Newsweek magazine issue seen in Stranger Things was real, but it had a different cover. The original photo showed Marcos Sr. in formal attire, while the show’s version presented him in a colorful shirt and seemingly doing a peace sign.

The magazine’s cover story talked about Marcos Sr.’s last moments in power before his family got kicked out of Malacañang through the EDSA People Power Revolution.

On Twitter, online users compared Marcos Sr. to a demogorgon, a.k.a. a predatory monster originating from the Upside Down. Some highlighted how his photo appeared in a scene where the character was talking about “The Devil” and “satanic worship.”
