The Internet says ‘yes to divorce’ after Jason cheated on Moira
It’s not new to hear about celebrity couples breaking up, but it could still hurt especially if you were once invested in their relationship. The Internet had a mix of heavy reactions when Jason Hernandez admitted that he cheated on Moira Dela Torre during their marriage.
The OPM power couple confirmed that they parted ways on the evening of May 31. Hernandez said he takes full responsibility for what happened. He wrote, ‘Though my love for her has always been genuine, a few months ago, I confessed to Moira that I have been unfaithful to her during our marriage.’
‘I believe that she deserved to know the truth rather than continue down a “peaceful” but dishonest path,’ Hernandez added. The Paubaya hitmaker hasn’t posted a personal statement as of writing.

Following Dela Torres and Hernandez’s announcement, the topic of saying “yes to divorce” trended on Twitter. Currently, the Philippines and the Vatican are the remaining two sovereign states that still prohibit divorce.
On August 17, 2021, the Committee on Population and Family Relations of the House of Representatives approved a bill proposing the legalization of divorce. It was then submitted to the House plenary for further analysis. The said bill covers the following:
-Separation of the spouses for at least five years at the time the petition for divorce is filed.
-Gender reassignment surgery or transitions from one sex to another by one of the spouses.
-Irreconcilable marital differences.
-Domestic or marital abuse.
-A divorce decree obtained abroad by one of the spouses.
According to ABS-CBN News, divorce bills were filed in legislative sessions since 1999, but these were never passed into law. In 2019, Sen. Risa Hontiveros filed an “absolute divorce” bill in the upper chamber.
What’s an alternative option?
While wedded couples in the country can’t opt for divorce, FCB Law Offices explained 3 ways to dissolve a marriage:
Recognition of Foreign Divorce – applicable for Filipinos who divorced a foreigner. While the trial may take a year and a half, it’s usually faster than an annulment.
Void Marriage – Marriages that are against the law or didn’t meet certain requirements before they were celebrated. These are also marriages not valid from the beginning which include psychological incapacity grounds.
Voidable Marriages – Marriages that are valid at the start, but can be annulled for certain reasons. This includes being solemnized without the consent of a parent or guardian, the consent of either party was obtained by fraud, or either party was afflicted with a sexually-transmissible disease. More reasons can be found on Lawyer Philippines’ website.
Meanwhile, Legal Separation and Judicial Separation of Property are often discussed in line with the previously stated alternatives. But the main point of this option is to divide property and not permit either party to marry again.
