Nope, Marcos Jr. still didn’t build the Ilocos Norte windmills

It’s official: Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., the son of the late dictator, was officially declared the 17th Philippine president on June 30. During his inaugural address, he mentioned his many plans for the country. When it comes to solutions to pollution, he claimed to have built the windmills in Ilocos Norte.

The project was brought up when Marcos talked about environmental sustainability in his speech. He said that he will seek help from partners to help the country lessen the harmful impact of climate change. He added, ‘We have yet to see large-scale practical solutions to pollution.’

‘Blades have been turning over the sand dunes of Ilocos Norte, harnessing a power all around but unseen, long before this day. I built them,’ Marcos continued. He was referring to the Bangui Wind Farm in Bangui in Ilocos Norte, which was Marcos’ home province.

The US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) said in a 1996 study that the Bangui Bay Wind Farm was founded by the NorthWind Power Development Corporation (NPDC). Despite being proven he didn’t establish the Bangui project, Marcos still attributes it to himself for discussions on sustainability.

According to UP Department of Broadcast Communication professors Daphne-Tatiana T. Canlas and Ma. Ivy A. Claudio, the wind farm has been falsely credited to him since 2015 and his time as the province’s governor from 1998 to 2007. On top of that, he also said the wind farm was a “private commercial enterprise” in an ANC interview in 2010.

Apart from his concern for the environment and reiterating his call for unity, Marcos also noted other plans that he will work on. He mentioned economic transformation, agriculture, energy supply, education system, tourism, and COVID-19 response.

Marcos also highlighted that he will be presenting “comprehensive infrastructure plans” to the public. He stated, ‘I will complete on schedule the projects that have been started. I am not interested in taking credit. I want to build on the success that’s already happening.’
