Nora Aunor is now a National Artist

Nora Aunor has a lot of accomplishments tied to her name, including being an award-winning actress, recording artist, and film producer. After being part of over a hundred films, she was recently named as one of the country’s National Artists.

The actress was specifically hailed as National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts. The announcement was made through Proclamation 1390 inked by President Rodrigo Duterte on June 10. The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) confirmed the issuance on their official Facebook pages.

The Order of National Artist is the highest national recognition given to Filipinos who have made distinct contributions to the development of the Philippine arts and culture. According to the NCCA, the awardee will receive a gold-plated medallion minted by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

FDCP Chair Liza Diño stated that Aunor’s contributions to the film and broadcast arts embodied the Filipinos’ “everyday realities and aspirations” in one of the most popular local films like Himala.

The actress shared her honor with Ricardo “Ricky” Lee and Marilou Diaz-Abaya. Meanwhile, five other prominent figures who landed a National Artist accolade are Agnes Locsin for Dance, Salvacion Lim-Higgins for Design (Fashion),  Gemino Abad for Literature, Fides Cuyugan-Asensio for Music, and Antonio “Tony” Mabesa for Theater.
