Boracay is one of the ‘world’s greatest places’ in 2022, says TIME

The Philippines has many popular tourist destinations like Palawan, which was previously ranked as the second-best island in the world in 2021. Meanwhile, Boracay recently made it to TIME Magazine’s World’s Greatest Places of 2022, a list that contains “50 extraordinary destinations to explore.”

Under Boracay’s description, TIME mentioned that former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte described the beach as “Paradise Lost,” or a “cesspool” back in 2018 after it was polluted by sewage. The whole island closed its doors to local and foreign tourists while it was going through rehabilitation for six months.

The magazine also stated that the move “took a severe toll on the local economy”, but the rehabilitation period was also a “silver lining” since it helped the Visayas island chain to truly recover.

TIME’s article noted, ‘As of February 2022, international visitors can finally revel in this revamped, recuperated, natural playground after what was effectively a three-year convalescence.’

The feature added that the return of flora and fauna, including sea turtles, and hospitality in Boracay has “come back just as spectacularly”. TIME compiled this year’s list by gathering nominations from their correspondents and contributors, who have “an eye toward those offering new and exciting experiences.”

Other international destinations that made it to the top 50 list are extreme amusements in UAE, year-round playground in Utah, and the cultural metropolis in Nairobi among many others.
