Zendaya and ‘Squid Game’ made history with 2022 Emmy nominations

What do Zendaya and Squid Game have in common? Both the actress and hit series made history as this year’s nominees in the 2022 Emmys.

Zendaya is the youngest two-time Emmy nominee

Zendaya has already earned an Emmy nod in 2020 for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role in Euphoria. Her leading role as Rue Bennett, a struggling teenage drug addict in the HBO show landed her a second nomination from the same category. She also happens to be an executive producer of the series.

The recognition makes the 25-year-old actress as the youngest two-time Emmy nominee in the said category. She received a total of four nominations in this year’s award show, which also places her as the first Black woman to receive both songwriting and acting nominations in the same year.

Squid Game received 14 nominations

Apart from being known as a show that blew away its viewers, Squid Game is no stranger to numerous international awards. But this time, the series earned 14 nominations at the 2022 Emmys. This makes the Korean survival drama as the first-ever non-English language show to receive a string of nods.

Dubbed as the most-watched Netflix show of all time, some of the show’s actors got a nod for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Lee Jung-jae), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category (Park Hae-soo and Oh Yeong-su), and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Jung Ho-yeon).

Squid Game‘s showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk said in a statement, ‘I hope that Squid Game’s Emmy nominations will open up even more opportunities for the whole world to enjoy and appreciate each other’s content beyond the barriers of culture and language.’
